Ah… the college essay, I know you've heard of how important it is to your application. But why? Perhaps the number one question I receive on the road or in our group sessions these days is "What do you really want to see in a college essay" Truthfully the answer is incredibly simple, and I think that is why I've been putting off writing this blog for a while. It probably doesn't suit you to hear:
"We want to get to know you. We want to learn about who you are beyond your transcripts and test scores."
However, that is the truth. I'll spend this blog using tips from Gina and Florence to help you draft a fantastic essay.

So as I mentioned earlier, I spent last weekend at St. Mary's College of Maryland for a Maryland Student Legislature event. It was a ton of fun! We debated all weekend and it was great to see members from other schools all over Maryland. We brought four new members of our McDaniel group; it was neat to see the new members enjoying debate.
Since returning on Sunday, I've been working hard on my senior seminar. It's due the Monday after Thanksgiving, but I'm touring two graduate schools next week and I want to be finished with my sem so I can bring it along. I'm really proud of my work so far--I'm quite invested in my topic and I'm excited to have a real quality project to turn in to my advisor and show grad schools.
Tonight we had an MSL fundraiser. We had a bunch of our club members over to the apartment for mexican food and to watch the movie Lord of War. It's fun to regroup and bond with our club after the event.
The rest of this week wil ...

So today was the last football game of the season and much like the rest of them, the rainy weather persisted through much of the game. After we had pulled our cars into the mud to tailgate bright and early at 11:00 the grass turned mostly to mud. As we all sat around watching the game, cooking hamburgers and hot dogs, and talking with some of the present alumni some of us decided to go play some football for ourselves. Naturally we had not planned on this and as a result were not dressed for the occasion. There was one play, for example, when I went out for a pass and because I was wearing boots, I slipped and fell into a rather large puddle of mud.
After everyone was good and dirty we returned to the real football game and finished out the second half by the grill. I'll tell you what, thia was the perfect way to end this week. I had spent virtually all of Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday writing my senior thesis and, whew... come Friday I was glad it was over. The end product wa ...

Well, it's been awhile since my last blog, so I have quite a bit of information to share with everyone. I was working in the Admissions Office Monday morning and received a phone call from Debbie Leazer from McDaniel's development office. She told me that she was calling on behalf of President Coley to invite me to a luncheon on Wednesday afternoon. President Coley is very involved in Network 2000, an organization formed in 1993 with the mission promoting the advancement of women in executive leadership. I told her that I would check with my professors that afternoon and get back to her.
Later that day, I went to Literature by Women II with Dr. Mary Bendel-Simso (an awesome class that I highly recommend) and an Intro Philosophy class with Dr. Vera Jakoby. I told them about the luncheon on Wednesday and they told me it was a great opportunity and as long as I kept up with my reading and got notes on what I missed in class, it was fine for me to go.
Tuesday morn ...

This weekend is poised to be a lot of fun! I'm off to St. Mary's College of Maryland for three days to debate with my fellow McDaniel College Maryland Student Legislature members as well as our colleagues from other universities around Maryland. Our statewide events (like this one) are so enjoyable. We have four a year--two in the fall and two in the spring. MSL has been super successful at McDaniel this year--we have recruited a good contingent of really smart, committed freshmen to join our ranks, and we have two people at involved in statewide leadership. It certainly makes this club president proud!
I'm also finishing up my law school applications, and hoping to submit next week. Very exciting. My senior seminar is coming along nicely. It is clocking in at about 17 pages right now and I'm feeling like I've probably passed the halfway mark. It's due in two and a half weeks. I'm really pleased with my progress so far--I feel like it will really be a quality piece of work. & ...

This morning I realized that I haven't updated this blog in a couple of weeks, I am sorry. Truthfully, I have so much I want to say, and I have no idea where to start. I want to provide you with an accurate picture of what is happening in our office as it happens. Let's start with November is a CRAZY time in Carroll Hall. I'll try to explain why...
Travel Season is drawing to a close. If you've met us on the road, seen us in your high school, or been following the blog you realize that throughout the fall months I rarely see my collegeagues. We're in different states each week spreading the good work about McDaniel. November means the end of travel season... so a final few days of crazy travel and we're all back in the office. As we all return, we begin to again see friends and family (we've missed you) and do laundry. In fact on the way to lunch today the ever-stylish Gina was rockin her bright-blue-trek in the rain- rain coat. I commented how much I liked it. She lamented " ...

I love registering for the next semester's classes! I look forward to it all semester. Just when things start to get a little sticky, you get to look ahead to what is coming next! Luckily the only class that closed before I got to register was a lab science, Intro. to Forensic Science. So, next semester I am taking 6 classes. Approaches to the Study of Language, American Novel, Jazz Voice, Finite Math, Creating a Character, and ASL IV. One of the things that I love about college is the fact that I can take up to 22 credits. Most people take 16 which is four courses, but plenty of us are overachievers here and take 5 or more. I am taking exactly 22 credits, so hopefully it will keep me busy.
Since McDaniel is a liberal arts school, they realize that not all of the students are going to be experts in everything. I am not a math person, so the math class I am taking (while I do not understand the title) is basically "everyday" math. I won't be in a Calculus class if I ...

The biggest difference between being in season and out is the amount of time I have. Without practice in the afternoons we have an extra 2 or 3 hours to catch up on work. Needless to say, I am taking full advantage of this. My senior thesis is coming along very rapidly now, instead of spending the afternoons on the field, I am now spending them in the library. It has been truly very busy but I am having a blast. I think that is one of the greatest things I've gained over my years here, a longing to learn and self-educate.
Well those are my weeks, this weekend the boys all got together on our turf field to play a full field football game. It was a blast, and it also became quite obvious the reasons why we play the sport where we have to use our feet, not our hands. I suppose that after the game the day passed pretty much normally. We played at 11:00 then sat in my apartment for a few hours and then we had a surprise birthday party for one of the boys on the team. Some of the guys t ...

I cannot believe that it is not only already November, but that there are only 3 weeks of classes left! The semester has flown by, and the work is beginning to pile up. My to-do list is rather long, but I am getting things done and keeping organized. When I came to school I ran my life much like I did in high school. I wrote things in my agenda and hoped they would get done, and my room was always a complete mess and I couldn't find anything. As I have continued my education and have now almost finished my third semester here, I have realized that organization is a skill that is important when running your own life without your parents telling you what to do and when to do it. If you're worried about this, do not fear! You can use a great resource on campus, Student Academic Support Services (SASS). They can help you if you have a documented learning disability, but if you simply need help with time management and organization they can help you as well, and I would highly recommend using their service ...
